Environmental Material Raitings

Last month, we discussed our different material types used when manufacturing our data center infrastructure products. This month, we are expanding on Materials 101 by discussing the various levels of protection provided by different material types.

One key benefit of choosing Hammond Manufacturing as your preferred vendor is the fact that we offer enclosures and cabinets manufactured using various materials with several levels of environmental ratings.

When referring to different environmental material ratings, Hammond uses the NEMA standards. NEMA stands for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association and is the trade association of choice for the electrical manufacturing industry.

Our top four (4) ratings used NEMA 1, 12, 4 and 4X:

NEMA 1 Used for indoor protection against personnel entry or falling dirt.

NEMA 12 Used for indoor/outdoor protection against the above, dust, dirt, fibers flyings as well as dripping or splashing of non-corrosive liquids.

NEMA 4 Used for indoor/outdoor protection against the above, windblown dusty, rain, sleet, snow and hose directed non-corrosive liquids.

NEMA 4X Used for indoor/outdoor protection against the above and includes corrosive liquids.
